DINDIGUL : Students of P.S.N.A. College of Engineering and Technology on Saturday picketed the Dindigul-Palani main road in protest against the alleged suicide by a college student. They also staged a sit-in strike on the college campus since morning demanding action against a teaching staff who reportedly threatened him.

Heavy police personnel were deployed at the college. Revenue officials held talks with students and college authorities.

V.R. Dinesh Kumar, a final-year civil engineering student and native of Pallapatti in Karur district, had reportedly committed suicide on Friday night.

Other students in his class alleged that invigilators had caught him on Friday when he “attempted” to copy in an examination. But external examiners, invigilators and the college principal had warned him and allowed him to continue his examinations, they said.

“Later, on knowing the incident, an assistant professor, in-charge only for distributing question papers, snatched his papers and took him to his room. He did not allow him to write the exam till the end. After an hour, he came out of the room. Unable to tolerate his threat, he must have committed suicide,” they alleged.

The students insisted that the teaching staff must be enquired and the conversation between them in the room brought to light. But the staff was not in the college for the inquiry. They urged the authorities to take immediate action against the staff.

The college authorities assured that an inquiry committee would be set up. Meanwhile, the body of the student was handed over to the parents after post postmortem.
